International Pet Transportation to the EU

The EU (European Union) is comprised of 27 countries plus Norway and Northern Ireland. The EU collectively issues a set of regulations which must be complied with to travel with your pet to an EU country. While the general set of requirements remain the same for all EU countries, country specific rules may be in place so check if your destination has issued any special conditions or treatments which must be done before import.

Pet Microchip

An ISO-compatible microchip is required to enter the EU. An ISO-11784/11785 microchip is the standard microchip used in countries the world over and is accepted as the only form of identification your pet can have. Remember to get your pet microchipped before their rabies vaccination, or at the same time.

Rabies Vaccination

Your pet must be vaccinated against rabies by an authorized vet before it can travel to an EU country. Your pet must be at least 12 weeks old at the time of vaccination and must be microchipped before the vaccination is administered. Your pet can travel after a minimum of 21 days have passed since the date of vaccination. Your pet must get any booster doses before the validity of the previous vaccination has expired.

You will need an EU animal health certificate to enter an EU country with your pet from a non-EU country. This certificate contains details about your pet such as their identity, health, and rabies vaccinations. Your pet must have an EU animal health certificate before travelling. This certificate is issued by an official state vet based in the country of departure. This certificate must be issued no more than 10 days before the date of arrival of your pet into the EU. Additionally, you will need to affix a written declaration to this health certificate which states that your relocation is not for commercial purposes.

Arriving in the EU

Pets must travel with their owners when travelling to an EU country. If the owner is unable to travel with their pet, they may provide written permission to another person to do so. This permission should be affixed along with the declaration of your non-commercial movement. If your pet is travelling with another person, then the pet and pet owner must be reunited within 5 days of reaching the EU.

Special Travel Conditions

You may travel with up to five pets to the EU. In case of the travel more than five pets, you must provide proof that your pets are participating in an event/exhibition/competition, and your pets must be more than 6 months of age before travelling. You and your pet can only enter the EU through a traveler’s point of entry. At this point, your travel documents will be verified by the authorities of your destination country.
