Mumbai Airport Busts Animal Smuggling Attempt, Several Animals Suffocate in Transit

Mumbai: Customs officers at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport recently uncovered a troubling case of animal smuggling, when a passenger was caught trying to bring in 45 live animals hidden in their luggage.

The man, who had just arrived on a Thai Airways flight, was caught after a routine check of his suitcase revealed a shocking discovery: iguanas, black foxes, raccoons, and hyraxes (small animals that look like rabbits) all packed together in cramped conditions. Sadly, many of the animals did not survive the journey, as they suffocated due to the lack of air and the harsh way they were transported.

Once the animals were found, experts from the Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare were called in to help stabilize and care for the survivors. Authorities have confirmed that, following the Wildlife Protection Act, the rescued animals will be sent back to their home country. Such an incident highlights the dangers and cruelty of wildlife trafficking, and airport officials have stressed the importance of staying alert to protect vulnerable animals from such illegal trade.
