Ahmedabad Dog Licence Fee Hiked To INR 2,000 By AMC
Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has announced a sharp hike in pet licence fees. From October 1, pet dog owners in the city will have to pay INR 2,000 per year for registration. Earlier, the fee was INR 200, which means the cost has increased by nearly 900 percent.
Pet registration in Ahmedabad was made mandatory from January 1, 2025, under AMC’s Rabies-Free Ahmedabad City 2030 initiative. The programme is aimed at ensuring every pet is vaccinated and accounted for, which will help the city strengthen its fight against rabies and improve overall safety.
The registration fee has been increased in phases over the year. It started at INR 200, then went up to INR 500 in June, and was further raised to INR 1,000 between August and September. With the latest revision, the fees have now reached INR 2,000 for registrations done from October to December.
AMC has also warned that strict action will be taken against pet owners who fail to register their animals. Notices will be issued, and house-to-house inspections are expected to identify unregistered pets. Officials believe this enforcement drive will push more residents to comply with the rules.
One of the reasons behind the tougher policy was a series of pet-related incidents in the city, including a tragic case in May when a four-month-old child died after being attacked by a Rottweiler. The corporation has since emphasised that compulsory registration and vaccination are necessary to prevent such accidents and to encourage responsible pet ownership.
According to AMC’s estimates, Ahmedabad has nearly 50,000 pet dogs, but less than half of them is currently registered. By raising the fee and tightening inspections, the civic body aims to build a reliable database of pet owners and improve animal welfare across the city.
While the cost of registering a pet has increased significantly, AMC has urged owners to complete the process without delay. Officials say the fee hike is part of a long-term plan to create a safer environment for citizens and to achieve the target of making Ahmedabad a rabies-free city by 2030.
