Chennai’s First Pet Crematorium Now Operational
Chennai: The first dedicated pet crematorium of Chennai is finally operational, opening its doors to pet owners after a long year-long wait. Set up by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) at Kannammapet in T Nagar, the facility opened its doors in October 2025, after a delay caused by operational and regulatory challenges. For the first time, pet owners in the city have access to a proper, respectful way to bid farewell to their furry companions.
Previously, many pet owners struggled with limited options for disposing of their pets after death. In some cases, pets were abandoned, or owners resorted to burying them in unsuitable areas, raising concerns about hygiene, safety, and environmental impact. The opening of this crematorium offers a compassionate and eco-friendly solution, ensuring that pets receive the dignified farewell they deserve.
The crematorium is equipped with modern dual-chambered gasifier technology, designed to handle small animals such as cats and dogs. In addition to the cremation facility, it features a prayer hall where owners can perform last rites, providing both emotional closure and an opportunity to honor the bond they shared with their pets. Ashes can be collected by the owners if they wish, allowing for personalized memorial options. The facility operates daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, making it easily accessible for pet owners throughout the week.
GCC officials emphasize that the service is entirely free, reflecting the city’s commitment to promoting responsible pet ownership and animal welfare. The initiative has already been welcomed by local animal welfare organizations, who view it as a progressive step in creating a more compassionate urban environment.
By launching this pet crematorium, Chennai sets an example for other cities in India, highlighting the growing recognition of pets as integral members of the family. The facility not only meets practical needs but also acknowledges the emotional importance of saying goodbye in a respectful manner.
Pet owners seeking to utilize the crematorium or learn more about its services can contact the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) or visit the facility during its operating hours. This landmark initiative is expected to encourage more humane and environmentally responsible practices for pet care across the country.
