Gurugram Cracks Down on Unregistered Pets in Upscale Societies, Corporation Reaches Out to RWAs
Gurugram: Despite clear guidelines from the Municipal Corporation, pet dog registration remains a neglected responsibility in many of Gurugram’s upscale residential societies. As reports of violations and pet-related incidents continue to rise, the Municipal Corporation is stepping up enforcement efforts, seeking cooperation from Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and society managements to implement stricter oversight.
Low Registration Numbers a Cause for Concern
Over the past year, 2,290 pet dogs have been officially registered with the Municipal Corporation. While this figure marks an improvement compared to previous years, officials admit it falls far short of the estimated actual pet population in the city. The gap highlights a widespread lack of compliance, particularly in premium housing societies where pet ownership is high.
Safety Issues Escalate in Gated Communities
The issue extends beyond paperwork. Officials note that even among pet owners who have completed registration, many are flouting basic rules regarding pet care and public conduct. Several residents have reported cases of dogs being allowed to roam freely in lifts, parks, and other common areas, sometimes resulting in bites and altercations. In some cases, the incidents have escalated to the point of police complaints, but long-term resolution remains elusive.
Corporation to Coordinate with RWAs
In response, the Municipal Corporation plans to directly engage RWAs and management bodies to enforce mandatory registration and ensure that pet-related guidelines are followed. Officials say that greater awareness among pet owners is also a key objective. This coordinated approach, they hope, will encourage residents to act more responsibly when it comes to both the safety and welfare of their animals and their neighbours.
Rules Every Pet Owner Must Follow
Authorities have reiterated the following rules for all dog owners in the city:
- All pet dogs must be registered with the Municipal Corporation.
- Dogs must be kept on a leash when in public areas.
- Timely vaccination, especially against rabies, is mandatory.
- Owners must maintain hygiene and take proper care of their pets.
Fines Imposed for Violations
To address the rising number of complaints, many societies have introduced penalties for non-compliance. A fine of ?500 is now being levied in several communities for letting pets roam without a leash. Repeated violations could attract stricter action.
Officials stress that although residents often keep expensive pedigree breeds, the level of care and compliance with civic norms leaves much to be desired. With the Corporation now actively monitoring the issue, stricter enforcement is expected in the days ahead. The city authorities have made their stance clear on the matter; owning a pet is a responsibility, not just a lifestyle choice.
