Madras High Court to Monitor Compliance with SC Stray Dog Order
Chennai, Tamil Nadu: The Madras High Court has directed the Centre, the Tamil Nadu government, and the Puducherry administration to submit status reports on the implementation of the Supreme Court's directions on stray dog management. The court will monitor compliance with the Supreme Court stray dog order as part of an ongoing effort to address the stray dog issue and improve public safety.
The matter was taken up after the Supreme Court directed High Courts across the country to oversee the implementation of its orders related to stray dog management through continuing proceedings.
The Supreme Court's directions focus on public places where safety concerns are significant, including educational institutions, hospitals, bus stands, railway stations, courts, and other commonly used public spaces. The apex court had asked authorities to take effective steps to address the stray dog issue while ensuring compliance with applicable laws.
During the hearing, the Madras High Court sought detailed reports from the concerned authorities on the measures taken so far and the progress made in implementing the Supreme Court's directions. The court indicated that it would continue monitoring compliance through regular hearings.
The stray dog issue has remained a matter of concern in several parts of the country due to reports of dog attacks and public safety complaints. The Supreme Court had earlier issued directions aimed at ensuring that authorities take appropriate measures to address the issue, particularly in sensitive public areas.
With the latest order, the Madras High Court has formally begun monitoring the implementation of the Supreme Court's directions in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The move is expected to increase accountability and strengthen efforts to manage stray dogs in public spaces.
