Crackdown on Illegal Wildlife Trade in Delhi Pet Shops Begins

New Delhi: The Delhi Forest department has launched inspections across pet shops in the capital to crack down on the illegal sale of endangered species protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Shops found in possession of such animals or birds will be sealed, and owners prosecuted.

"All four deputy conservator of forests (DCFs) have been asked to identify and act against pet shops selling animals and birds illegally. A similar campaign was initiated last year as well. Many species of animals and birds, like parakeets, are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act. However, exotic animals need to be declared separately under the Living Animal Species Rules, 2024," said a senior forest official

Only domesticated animals like cats and dogs (excluded from the Act) are legally permitted for sale, officials said. Any shop found trading in protected species will face legal action, including FIRs under the Wildlife Protection Act.

The move follows a 2022 inspection by animal welfare group Ahimsa Fellows, which uncovered several violations across over 30 shops.
