US FDA Greenlights 12-Month Flea and Tick Injection for Dogs: A Closer Look

Dog owners in the U.S. have a new reason to celebrate: a groundbreaking flea and tick treatment has just been approved by the FDA. Bravecto Quantum, the first of its kind, offers up to a full year of protection against these bothersome parasites with just one injection.

Approved for dogs and puppies aged six months and older, this innovative shot could potentially replace the hassle of monthly or quarterly treatments, making parasite prevention easier and more effective than ever.

"Fluralaner, the active ingredient in Bravecto Quantum, can be an important part of parasite control depending on where pet owners live in the country," said Dr. Tina Wismer, senior director of toxicology at ASPCA Poison Control, in an email to ABC News. "A long-term flea and tick preventative can be a useful option for dog owners who live in areas where year-round protection is necessary, or for those who might not be able or remember to administer treatment on a monthly or quarterly basis."

The new injectable flea and tick treatment, Bravecto Quantum, must be administered by a licensed veterinarian. The veterinarian will decide whether your dog needs 8 or 12 months of protection, depending on the types of ticks common in your area, and will monitor your dog for any side effects after the injection
Bravecto Quantum uses fluralaner, part of the isoxazoline class of drugs, which are generally considered safe but can, in rare cases, cause neurologic side effects such as muscle tremors and seizures, even in dogs with no prior history of such issues. Other potential side effects observed in studies include lethargy, decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and itching, but most reactions are mild and short-lived.

Animal welfare advocates, like Julie Cappiello from Voters for Animal Rights, have welcomed the convenience of this new option, but urge pet owners and veterinarians to exercise caution and closely monitor dogs after administration, especially those with a history of seizures or neurological disorders.

"As someone who spends a great deal of time outdoors with my dog, I see the convenience of a long-lasting, 12-month flea and tick preventative like Bravecto Quantum," she said in a statement. "However, it's important to recognize that no single treatment is right for every dog, and all medications come with potential risks."

The newly approved long-acting flea and tick treatment for dogs, is manufactured by Intervet, Inc., based in Rahway, New Jersey.
