Supreme Court Allows Euthanasia of Rabid Dogs, Keeps Stray Dog Relocation Order

Amid rising concerns over stray dog attacks and dog bite cases in India, the Supreme Court has refused to modify its earlier order on the removal of stray dogs from public places such as schools, hospitals and court complexes.

The court also said that rabid and highly dangerous stray dogs can be euthanised according to legal procedures under the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules. However, the bench made it clear that healthy stray dogs cannot be killed and no mass culling of dogs will be allowed.

Several petitions had asked the Supreme Court to recall its November 2025 order, arguing that it could lead to misuse and large-scale removal of stray dogs. The court, however, refused to change its earlier directions, saying public safety concerns cannot be ignored.

The judges noted that authorities may relocate stray dogs from sensitive public institutions where there may be risks to children, patients and the elderly. The court also stressed that animal welfare laws must continue to be followed during any action taken against stray dogs.

Earlier, the court had also issued directions regarding the Removal of stray dogs from Delhi-NCR after taking note of rising dog bite incidents and public safety concerns in the region.

Following previous Supreme Court directions on stray dog management, Delhi authorities had also identified designated stray dog feeding points across the city to regulate feeding activities and reduce conflicts in public spaces.

The latest Supreme Court ruling is expected to play an important role in the ongoing debate around stray dog laws, public safety and animal welfare in India.
