Ranchi Speeds Up Dog Sterilisation, Urges Pet Registration

Ranchi: The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has intensified its drive to control the stray dog population by accelerating sterilisation and anti-rabies vaccination, while also urging residents to register their pet dogs.

The move comes amid a rise in dog bite cases across the city. Officials said the campaign is being carried out under the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme, which focuses on sterilising stray dogs to curb breeding and vaccinating them to prevent rabies.

According to recent figures shared by the civic body, hundreds of stray dogs have already been captured, sterilised and vaccinated in the past few weeks as part of the expanded drive. The operations are being conducted across multiple wards, including densely populated residential areas, markets and public places.

After surgery and recovery, the dogs are released back into the same locations, following standard animal welfare guidelines. Alongside the sterilisation effort, the RMC has appealed to pet owners to register their dogs with the municipal body. Officials said pet registration will help maintain proper records, track vaccinations and ensure accountability among owners.

Civic authorities stressed that controlling the stray dog population through sterilisation is a long-term solution that is both humane and effective. They also urged residents to cooperate by reporting stray dog concerns and ensuring their pets are vaccinated.

The RMC said the combined approach of sterilisation, vaccination and public participation is essential to reduce dog bite incidents and improve overall public safety in Ranchi.
