How to Reserve a Pet Box in Vande Bharat Sleeper
Pet travel in India is seeing a small but important change with the introduction of a pet box facility in Vande Bharat Sleeper trains. The move allows passengers to transport their pets in a more structured and secure way, although the booking process is still manual.
Under this system, pets are not allowed inside passenger cabins. Instead, they are placed in a designated enclosure located in the train’s luggage or parcel section. These pet boxes are designed to keep animals safe during the journey, with basic ventilation and space for travel.
To reserve a pet box, passengers must first book their own train ticket and ensure it is confirmed. The process is then completed at the railway station on the day of travel.
Booking process:
- Book a confirmed train ticket (PNR required)
- Visit the parcel or luggage office at your boarding station
- Reach at least 3 hours before departure
- Submit the required documents
- Get your pet weighed at the counter
- Pay the applicable charges
- Collect the luggage ticket as confirmation
Passengers need to carry the following documents:
Documents required:
- Confirmed train ticket (PNR)
- Government-issued ID
- Pet vaccination certificate
- Fitness certificate from a registered vet, issued within 24 to 48 hours of travel
The cost of transporting pets in Vande Bharat Sleeper follows the standard parcel or luggage rate system of Indian Railways. Charges are based on the pet’s weight and the distance of the journey. On average, the cost is around INR 30 per kg, although the final fare may vary depending on the route.
At present, there is no option to book this service online through platforms like IRCTC. The entire process must be completed in person at the station, and availability is limited. Passengers are advised to arrive early, as bookings are handled close to departure and are not guaranteed.
While the introduction of the pet box facility is a step forward, the reliance on offline booking and last-minute confirmation shows that the system is still developing. For now, planning ahead and carrying the right documents is essential for a smooth experience.
