Pets can fly with Virgin Australia from October 2025

From 16 October 2025, Virgin Australia will become the first Australian airline to allow small pets to fly in the cabin on selected domestic flights. The new policy means cats and dogs weighing up to eight kilograms, including their carrier, can travel alongside their owners rather than being confined to the cargo hold. The service will initially launch on routes between Melbourne and Queensland, with plans to expand to other destinations in the future.

Until now, Virgin Australia passengers could only fly with pets as checked baggage in the cargo hold. The new in-cabin option is designed to reduce stress for animals and give pet owners greater peace of mind. Virgin has confirmed that pets must travel in approved soft-sided carriers that fit under the seat in front of the passenger. Animals will need to stay inside the carrier for the duration of the flight, including take-off and landing.

The service will cost AU$149 per pet, per flight, and bookings must be made at least 72 hours before departure. Only adult passengers will be eligible to bring pets on board, and the service will not be available to travellers flying with infants or assistance animals. Virgin has also set aside designated seating areas to accommodate pet owners while minimising inconvenience for other passengers.

To ensure safety and comfort, pets must pass through security screening before boarding. Owners will be required to carry their animals through the checkpoint while the carrier is scanned. Virgin has also advised passengers to prepare their pets in advance by getting them used to the carrier and by bringing supplies such as wipes and absorbent pads in case of accidents during the flight.

Animal welfare organisations, including the RSPCA, have welcomed the move but warned owners to be mindful of breeds that are more vulnerable to respiratory issues, such as flat-faced cats and dogs. Aviation experts also note that the change reflects a global trend in which airlines are adapting to modern travellers who increasingly view pets as family members. Virgin says that onboard ventilation systems and seat-level airflow will help reduce allergens and maintain cabin comfort for all passengers.

The decision follows a 2021 change by Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority, which gave airlines the discretion to allow non-service animals in cabins under strict safety rules. Virgin Australia’s new policy now brings it in line with leading US and European carriers that already permit pets to travel in the cabin.

With the launch of pet-friendly flights from 16 October 2025, Virgin Australia is expected to attract strong demand from pet owners who previously avoided air travel because of the stress of separating from their animals. The airline says the move will not only improve passenger experience but also boost domestic tourism by making travel easier for families with pets.
