New UK Dog Law Implemented from November 1 with Threats of Jail Time

As the UK government continues cracking down on banned dog breeds, a new dog law came into effect on November 1, 2026. Owners of banned dog breeds now must ensure that children under the age of 12 are not left in contact with their pet in private spaces like homes or a garden without adult supervision.

The Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) warns that children under 12 years old are at “higher risk of dog-related injuries in the home,” because they may make sudden movements, create loud noises, or engage in close contact, which may make the animal uncomfortable.

Currently, five dog breeds are banned in the U.K; Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, and the XL Bully. The ban means it is illegal to sell, give away, abandon, or breed any of these dog breeds. Owners of these breeds must have proof of valid certificates of exemption for their dog, which must not behave aggressively or dangerously, to keep their pets.
