Mumbai Set to Get Two New Pet Crematoriums by October 2025, BMC Tells High Court
Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has informed the Bombay High Court that two new animal crematoriums, located in Mahalaxmi and Deonar, are expected to be operational by October 2025.
The assurance came during a hearing on a suo motu Public Interest Litigation (PIL) taken up by the court to address the lack of dedicated cremation infrastructure for pets and stray animals in the city.
At present, Mumbai has only one functional pet crematorium, located in Malad. Responding to the court’s earlier directive, the civic body said the Mahalaxmi facility is nearly complete, with 90 percent of construction finished. The Deonar crematorium, which will have a 50 kg capacity, is awaiting finalisation of its gas connection but is also expected to be ready by October.
Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sandeep Marne acknowledged the timelines presented and noted that the BMC had taken appropriate steps toward resolving the infrastructure gap. Following this, the court disposed of the petition.
The PIL was initiated by the court on June 11, after a media report highlighted delays in the Deonar project, which had left pet owners and animal welfare groups without sufficient cremation options.
With the promised timeline now in place, the city could soon have three operational animal crematoriums catering to both pet and stray animal welfare needs.
