Mumbai Pet Cremation: BMC Opens Facilities in Deonar and Mahalaxmi

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has opened two new pet cremation facilities in Mumbai at Deonar and Mahalaxmi, improving access to organised services for the last rites of animals across the city. The facilities became operational on April 1, 2026, following directions from the Bombay High Court to strengthen cremation infrastructure for small animals and birds.

With these additions, Mumbai now has three such centres, including the existing facility in Malad. The expansion is expected to reduce travel time for residents and provide easier access to authorised pet cremation services in different parts of the city, especially for those living in central and eastern Mumbai.

The Deonar unit, located within the civic abattoir, can handle larger animals weighing up to 500 kg and operates on piped natural gas, offering a cleaner and more efficient system. The Mahalaxmi facility, set up at an animal hospital in partnership with Tata Trusts, is fully electric and designed for animals weighing up to 50 kg. Both centres aim to provide a more scientific and environmentally safer alternative to informal disposal methods.

For pet owners in Mumbai, this development brings more clarity and structure to a process that has often been difficult to navigate. Residents can now access BMC pet cremation services through an online booking system available on the civic body’s veterinary health platform, along with a dedicated helpline for support during emergencies.

Earlier, limited availability and delays in setting up such infrastructure had made it challenging for people to find reliable animal cremation services in Mumbai. The expansion not only addresses those gaps but also reflects the growing need for organised solutions as pet ownership continues to rise in urban areas.

The civic body also provides free cremation for licensed dogs, encouraging pet owners to complete registration and maintain proper records. This plays an important role in tracking vaccinations, managing animal populations, and improving overall public health systems in the city.

As more residents look for accessible and respectful ways to handle pet loss, the addition of these facilities is expected to make the process more manageable, while also supporting better hygiene and environmental standards across Mumbai.
