MCD Rolls Out 1000 Feeding Points for Stray Dogs in Delhi
New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has announced the setup of 1,000 designated feeding zones for stray dogs across the city. This initiative comes after the Supreme Court banned public feeding of stray dogs except at designated locations. This move aims to ensure the safety and well-being of both the dogs and the city’s residents.
According to Satya Sharma, the chairperson of the MCD standing committee and the head of the dog sub-committee meetings, the corporation will make three to four feeding spots in each of Delhi’s 250 wards. This will total around 1,000 spots across the city, although some wards may have more or fewer depending on their size. The feeding points will be carefully selected to avoid high-traffic areas such as busy intersections and marketplaces. The goal is to place these feeding zones away from residential entry points to reduce any disturbance for people living nearby.
Local councillors, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), and sanitation inspectors will work together to identify and manage these feeding points. The MCD has issued orders to all zonal deputy commissioners to coordinate with local councillors in identifying suitable locations. An action taken report on this task is expected to be submitted within a week of the directive.
The Supreme Court had also ordered that non aggressive stray dogs be sterilized and vaccinated before being released back. In response, MCD is working to increase the capacity of sterilization centers and set up shelter homes to house aggressive dogs. This initiative by the MCD is seen as a way to balance the needs of stray dogs with public health and safety concerns. By creating designated feeding points, the corporation hopes to reduce conflicts between stray dogs and people while ensuring the animals are properly cared for.
This development is expected to bring relief to dog lovers and residents alike, as it provides a structured and legal means to feed and look after stray dogs across Delhi. The corporation will continue to monitor the program and adjust it as needed to ensure its success.
