Dakshina Kannada Pet Shops Mandated to Register with SPCA, Says Deputy Commissioner

In an effort to safeguard the welfare of pet animals, the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, H.V. Darshan, has emphasized the necessity for all pet shops across the district to officially register with the District Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). This directive was issued during the executive committee meeting of the District SPCA held on Tuesday.

Mr. Darshan highlighted that pet shop owners who have not yet completed their registration should be granted a grace period to comply with the new rule. However, he made it clear that continued operation without registration would prompt strict legal measures from the authorities.

The meeting also addressed several pressing issues, including the establishment of the Praani Mitra hospital in Bodantila village, Mangaluru taluk. The proposed facility aims to provide medical care for stray animals. Additionally, participants discussed the urgent requirement for designated burial sites for animals found deceased on public roads, to prevent health hazards caused by decaying remains.

N. Arun Kumar Shetty, Deputy Director of the Animal Husbandry Department, outlined ongoing public awareness campaigns about available treatment options for street dogs, cats, and cattle. He also detailed the district’s efforts to enforce animal welfare regulations effectively.

The session saw active participation from key officials, including Superintendent of Police K. Arun, Mangaluru City Corporation Commissioner Ravichandra Nayak, Assistant Commissioner of Police Geeta Kulkarni, and District SPCA member Suma R. Nayak.
