BMC Expands Waste Collection: Now Includes Pet Waste, E-Waste Pickup Begins May 5
Mumbai – The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is stepping up its waste management game. Starting this week, the city’s sanitary and special care waste collection service will now also cover pet excreta. From May 5 onward, Mumbaikars can also expect doorstep collection of electronic waste (e-waste), as part of a new, separate civic initiative.
Initially launched to handle sensitive waste like used sanitary pads, diapers, expired medicines, contaminated bandages, and personal hygiene items such as tampons and condoms, the collection drive now serves 444 entities, including housing societies, beauty parlours, schools, and women’s hostels.
The move to include pet waste follows public demand and feedback since the launch of the service on Saturday. According to civic officials, improperly discarded items such as razors, needles, and bio-contaminated material pose major health hazards to sanitation workers.
In parallel, the civic body is launching a new e-waste pickup service to curb improper disposal of electronics. With the rise in usage of gadgets across the city, improper handling of discarded devices has become a growing concern. Toxic substances like mercury, lead, and cadmium found in e-waste can seep into the environment if mixed with general waste.
To promote safe recycling and disposal, citizens can register for the e-waste collection service using a link shared by the BMC or through QR codes provided for the initiative.
