Ahmedabad Launches CNG Based Pet Dog Crematorium
Ahmedabad, Gujarat: For thousands of pet owners in Ahmedabad, saying goodbye to their dog has just become a little more humane. The city has launched a CNG based pet dog crematorium, offering a dignified, scientific, and eco-friendly way to cremate pets. The facility has been set up by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and is now fully operational at the CNCD ABC Centre in Behrampura, making it Gujarat’s first municipal run pet dog crematorium.
Until recently, pet owners in Ahmedabad had very limited choices after the death of a pet. Many were forced to depend on unsafe burial practices or expensive private services. The new AMC dog crematorium in Ahmedabad has been introduced to address this long-standing gap, following repeated requests from residents and animal welfare groups for a proper and hygienic solution.
The crematorium runs on compressed natural gas (CNG) and uses a closed, dual-chamber system designed to ensure complete and safe cremation. The process is smoke-free and odourless, reducing air pollution and health risks linked to improper disposal of animal remains. The chambers operate at high temperatures, which helps prevent the spread of disease. The facility can cremate up to three pet dogs at a time, allowing it to handle rising demand as pet ownership grows in the city.
The cost of pet dog cremation in Ahmedabad at the AMC facility has been fixed at around INR 700, keeping the service affordable. Pet owners are provided with basic amenities such as an air-conditioned waiting area and a CCTV viewing facility, which allows families to witness the cremation if they wish. AMC has also arranged a dedicated vehicle to collect pet remains from homes or veterinary clinics on request, easing the process during emotionally difficult moments.
Civic officials said the eco-friendly pet crematorium also plays an important role in public health and sanitation. Improper burial of animals can contaminate soil and groundwater and may spread infections. By offering a municipal pet cremation service, AMC aims to ensure safe disposal while reducing environmental damage. Compared to traditional methods, CNG-based cremation produces far fewer emissions and requires minimal space.
The facility is part of AMC’s broader animal welfare initiative, which includes pet registration, vaccination drives, sterilisation programmes, and animal birth control measures. With the number of registered pets in Ahmedabad steadily increasing over the years, officials said such infrastructure has become essential. The crematorium became operational earlier this month, and civic authorities are already assessing demand to decide whether similar facilities are needed in other zones of the city.
Pet owners who have used the service said it offered comfort during a difficult time, allowing them to give their pets a respectful farewell. Animal welfare organisations have also welcomed the move, calling it a necessary step for modern urban animal care.
With the launch of the CNG based pet dog crematorium, Ahmedabad has combined compassion with civic responsibility, setting an example for other cities looking to improve animal welfare while protecting the environment.
