Abu Dhabi Launches New Pet-Friendly Tourism Rules

Abu Dhabi has introduced new tourism rules that make it easier for visitors to travel with their pets. Under updated guidelines, hotels and restaurants with tourism licences can now choose to welcome companion animals, such as cats and dogs, when owners visit. This is a shift from older regulations that generally only allowed certified service animals into hospitality venues.

The change comes as part of efforts to broaden the emirate’s appeal to travellers who want to bring their beloved animals on holiday. Pet owners often struggle to find destinations where they can enjoy both sightseeing and quality time with their pets, and Abu?Dhabi’s new stance aims to fill that gap.

Under the policy, venues that opt to be pet friendly are encouraged to set up dedicated spaces for animals. Many of these areas are likely to be outdoors, such as patios or balcony sections, but some indoor pet friendly zones may also be allowed if they meet health and safety requirements. This approach is designed to keep all guests comfortable while ensuring animals are safe and well looked after.

Officials say the decision to offer more pet friendly tourism options reflect a growing global trend. More travellers than ever are planning trips with their pets, and destinations that accommodate these needs are often seen as more welcoming and inclusive. The hope is that this will boost visitor numbers and encourage longer stays by families and individuals who value travelling with their animal companions.

The rollout of these guidelines will be voluntary for hotels and restaurants. That means venues can decide for themselves whether they want to introduce pet friendly services. The authorities are urging businesses to join the initiative, saying it could strengthen Abu?Dhabi’s position as a forward thinking global destination.

Industry insiders also point to earlier examples of pet friendly hospitality in the emirate. Some hotels had already started allowing pets under specific terms, and the new rules are expected to encourage more properties to adopt similar practices, helping put Abu?Dhabi on the map for travellers who consider their pets part of the family.
