Virgin Australia Introduces In-Cabin Pet Travel
Virgin Australia has introduced an in-cabin pet travel service, allowing small cats and dogs to accompany their owners inside the aircraft cabin on select domestic routes. The ground breaking trial began on 16 October 2025 and will continue until 30 January 2026, making Virgin Australia the first airline in the country to offer such a service. Initially, the in-cabin pet travel option will operate on routes connecting Melbourne with the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.
This new initiative aims to create a more comfortable and stress-free travel experience for pet owners and their animals. Traditionally, pets in Australia have been required to travel in the cargo hold, which can be an anxious experience for both the animal and the owner. With this program, Virgin Australia is responding to the growing demand for pet-friendly travel and acknowledging that pets are increasingly considered part of the family.
The service allows small dogs and cats weighing up to 8 kilograms, including the carrier, to travel in an approved soft-sided crate that fits beneath the passenger’s seat. The introductory fare for the trial period has been set at AUD 149 per pet, per flight. To ensure comfort and safety for all passengers. Virgin Australia will limit the number of pets permitted on each flight and designate special seating zones for pet owners. Pets must remain inside their carriers throughout the journey, while crew members will be trained to assist with any pet-related needs during the flight.
During the trial period, the airline will collect data and customer feedback to evaluate the service’s effectiveness and consider its expansion to other domestic routes. Virgin Australia’s management believes that this initiative has the potential to transform domestic air travel by giving passengers greater flexibility when travelling with their pets. If successful, it could pave the way for similar offerings across other airlines and markets.
The move has been welcomed by pet owners and animal welfare groups, who see it as a step forward in making air travel more inclusive and compassionate. With growing interest in pet-friendly tourism and a rising number of households owning companion animals, this development highlights the evolving needs of modern travellers. Virgin Australia’s in-cabin pet travel service sets a new benchmark for pet-inclusive travel, offering convenience, care and comfort for both owners and their beloved animals.
