Thane Municipal Corporation Launches Online Pet Registration

Thane, Maharashtra: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has introduced an online facility for dog-licence registration, allowing residents to complete the process without visiting municipal offices. The civic body said the move is intended to streamline licensing and improve the accuracy of pet-related records across the city.

Under the new system, pet owners can now access the dog-licence application form online, fill it out, and submit it digitally along with the required documents. While TMC has not yet launched a dedicated online portal, the availability of the form and digital submission options marks a shift toward a more accessible and paperless registration process.

The annual licence fee remains INR 400, and first-time applicants must pay a refundable deposit of INR 2,000, along with standard charges for the licence booklet or identification badge. TMC has also specified a late-renewal fine of INR 100 for pet owners who fail to renew the licence within the deadline.

Required Documents for Dog Registration

Applicants must submit the following documents while filing for the licence:

  • Photocopy of Aadhar Card and PAN Card
  • Dog’s vaccination certificate
  • Residential proof and address proof of the owner
  • Health certificate issued by a veterinary officer
  • Two passport-sized photographs of the dog
  • Dog breed certificate (if available)

The application form can be downloaded from the TMC website using the following link:

Once the form and supporting documents are prepared, owners can submit them online through their respective ward office’s digital channels. The system also enables applicants to track their approval status and receive reminders for future licence renewals.

At present, the online registration facility is limited to dogs, as TMC is yet to extend the process to other pets. Officials have indicated that the system may be expanded once the current phase is fully implemented.

Thane has an estimated 15,000 pet dogs, but only around 7,000 are officially registered. The civic administration believes the digital application option will encourage more owners to comply with licensing norms and help maintain updated records on vaccinated and registered dogs.

In addition, TMC is preparing to launch a helpline allowing residents to report issues related to stray dogs or unregistered pets, supporting both public safety and animal welfare efforts.
