Thane Launches Its First Gas-Based Pet Crematorium
Thane, Maharashtra: Thane has inaugurated its first dedicated gas-based pet crematorium at Majiwada, a significant development for the city’s growing community of pet owners. The facility was officially opened by State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, who highlighted its importance for providing a respectful final resting place for pets.
Until now, pet owners in Thane had limited options for pet cremation and often had to travel to Mumbai. The new crematorium is part of a broader initiative by the local government to upgrade cremation infrastructure and to make it more accessible for animals.
Built at an estimated cost of INR 50 lakh, the Majiwada facility runs on gas and is designed with modern emission control measures to reduce environmental impact. It sits next to an existing human crematorium but has a separate entrance to maintain dignity and privacy for pet families.
Minister Sarnaik noted that the creation of the pet crematorium reflects the growing number of pet owners in Thane. He said, “Thane has a large number of pet lovers who treat their pets as family but after their death, people had no proper place for cremation.”
According to municipal sources, the crematorium is one of six such upgrades planned across Thane and Mira-Bhayander, with similar facilities being installed at other crematoriums, each initially budgeted at around INR 26 lakh.
Officials also mentioned future plans, beyond this crematorium, they hope to develop pet-friendly amenities such as pet gardens and shelters. The facility will be open to all pet owners, and the civic administration has committed to sharing details on pricing, booking, and operating hours soon.
