Navi Mumbai Makes Dog Licence Mandatory for All Pet Owners
Mumbai: If you live in Navi Mumbai and have a pet dog, there is an important update you cannot ignore. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has made it mandatory for all dog owners within its jurisdiction to obtain a valid licence for their pets. The move comes as part of the formal implementation of the NMMC Dog Tax Regulations of 1993, backed by the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act of 1949 under Chapter 11, Section 149(1), and Section 127(2)(a).
Although the regulations have been on the books since the early 1990s, this is the first time the civic body is rolling them out with full force, following the state government’s approval.
According to civic officials, the dog licence will now serve as an official recognition of pet ownership, helping maintain pet care standards and public accountability within the city. The NMMC has also issued a warning: owners who keep dogs without a valid licence may face strict action.
The process to apply is relatively straightforward. Pet owners must head to the NMMC's official website (www.nmmc.gov.in) go to ‘Citizen Services,’ and then select the Health Department section to begin their application. Licences will be issued through the Health Department's offices, and renewals will be required to maintain an active registration status.
"Pet parents should complete the licensing process at the earliest to avoid fines or legal issues," said an official from the health department. “This isn't just about paperwork; it ensures accountability and better welfare for animals living in urban spaces.”
NMMC Commissioner Kailas Shinde emphasized that the administration is urging full public cooperation, highlighting that responsible pet ownership includes compliance with civic regulations.
However, the move has received a lukewarm reception thus far. Ramesh Kumar, a Navi Mumbai resident and dog owner, voiced his concerns, calling the policy “a bit of a harsh call” by the authorities.
As the regulation takes effect, the message is clear: if you’re a dog owner in Navi Mumbai, securing a licence for your furry companion is now the law.
