India’s First Green Pet Crematorium Opens in Faridabad
Faridabad, Haryana: India’s first green pet crematorium has been set up in Budhena village in Faridabad, Haryana, introducing an eco-friendly system for animal cremation.
The facility has been developed with the support of the Municipal Corporation of Faridabad (MCF) and is being operated by the NGO Aapsee. It was launched around National Pet Day and has already carried out 42 cremations, indicating early adoption by residents.
According to officials, the crematorium is designed to replace traditional open-air methods of animal disposal, which were earlier commonly used but raised concerns related to hygiene and pollution.
The key feature of the facility is its eco-friendly furnace, which significantly reduces wood consumption and emissions. While conventional cremation methods can require up to 400 kg of wood, this system uses around 60 to 80 kg during the initial cycle, and about 30 kg once it reaches its operating temperature of approximately 800°C.
Officials said the move is aimed at addressing gaps in urban animal management. With a growing number of households keeping pets, the lack of structured and hygienic cremation options has been a challenge in many cities.
The project has been implemented with technical guidance from a renowned environmentalist. The Faridabad Municipal Corporation is also providing financial assistance of INR 50,000 per month to support its daily operations.
Authorities added that the facility will also handle the cremation of stray animals, with proper records being maintained and monitoring systems such as CCTV in place to ensure transparency.
The initiative is part of a larger effort by Aapsee, which has previously established more than 700 green crematoriums for human use. Plans are also being considered to expand similar pet cremation facilities to other locations.
Officials described the project as a step towards reducing environmental impact while providing a structured system for handling animal remains in urban areas.
