IATA Issues New Guidelines for In-Cabin Pet Travel

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released new IATA pet travel guidelines to help airlines make in-cabin pet travel safer and more consistent. The guidance encourages airlines to adopt clearer pet travel policies covering pet eligibility, carrier requirements, cabin procedures and staff training. While these are not mandatory rules, they provide a common framework that airlines can follow to improve air travel with pets and offer a smoother experience for pet owners.

The guidance comes as more people are choosing to fly with their pets, leading airlines to review how animals can be accommodated while ensuring passenger safety, animal welfare and efficient flight operations.

According to IATA, airlines are encouraged to move towards a risk-based approach instead of blanket restrictions when deciding whether pets can travel in the cabin. The recommendations also call for clear eligibility criteria, standard pet carrier requirements, defined seating and handling procedures, and better training for airline staff.

For pet owners, these IATA in-cabin pet travel guidelines could eventually mean more consistent airline pet policies, clearer travel requirements and fewer surprises when booking flights. However, travellers should note that IATA's guidance is voluntary. Individual airlines will decide if and when they adopt these recommendations, and their existing pet travel rules will continue to apply until then.

It's also important to understand that IATA does not set legally binding aviation regulations. Airlines and national aviation authorities will continue to determine whether pets are allowed in the cabin, weight and size limits, approved pet carriers, documentation requirements and route-specific restrictions.

As international pet travel continues to grow, the new guidance is expected to encourage greater consistency across the aviation industry. Until airlines update their policies, pet owners planning to travel should always check their airline's latest requirements before booking. For complex journeys, working with a professional pet relocation company can also help ensure all travel documents and airline requirements are met.
