China Upgrades Pet Travel Rules on High-Speed Trains
China has introduced new pet travel rules on its high-speed rail network, making transportation safer and more convenient for pet owners. This move reflects the country’s increasing focus on pet-friendly travel and improved animal care during journeys.
The updated high-speed train pet transport service now operates across a wider network, covering over 100 stations and hundreds of trains. With this expansion, more people can consider rail as a practical option instead of flights or road travel.
The revised system brings clearer guidelines and improved facilities, offering greater flexibility:
- Pets can travel either with their owners or through a separate transport system
- Only cats and dogs weighing under 15 kg are permitted
- The service is available on an expanded range of routes
These changes make the China railway pet transport system more efficient and easier to access.
Pets are not allowed inside passenger cabins. Instead, they are placed in specially designed compartments that prioritize safety and comfort. These units are equipped with temperature and oxygen monitoring, proper ventilation, noise and odor control, water supply, and live tracking throughout the journey. This setup ensures a more secure environment compared to traditional transport methods.
A key highlight is the flexibility in travel options:
- Travel with pets: Owners can take the same train while their pets are cared for in a designated section
- Pet-only transport: Animals can be sent independently through the railway logistics service
This is especially useful for people relocating or arranging intercity pet transport.
Bookings can be made through official platforms such as the 12306 app and WeChat services. Pet owners must complete the process in advance and follow guidelines related to size, health, and carriers.
The service also includes basic insurance coverage, adding an extra layer of security. During earlier trial phases, thousands of pets were transported successfully, indicating that the system is already functioning smoothly.
Compared to air travel, train journeys can be less stressful for animals, particularly over short to medium distances. The process is also simpler in terms of booking and handling, making it a convenient alternative.
Overall, these updates make it easier to plan trips or relocations with pets. With improved safety measures and wider availability, rail transport is becoming a more reliable option. As demand for pet-friendly travel continues to grow in China, such developments are likely to encourage more pet owners to choose this mode of transport.
