Chennai: Now Register Your Pet Online with the Chennai Corporation

The Chennai Corporation has launched an online pet registration system, wherein pet owners can register their pets with the corporation and obtain a license of ownership. To register your dog or cat, they must have been vaccinated against rabies, with provisions for the registration of birds and other animals coming soon.

On Thursday, May 8, Chennai Mayor R. Priya launched the system for the online registration of dogs and cats in the capital city. Much like cities all over India, the registration drive is being conducted to ensure pets are vaccinated against the deadly rabies virus. “We want to ascertain if an anti-rabies vaccine is administered to pet dogs and cats. The pet licence will be approved only if the vaccine is administered,” said the official.  Roughly 40,000 dogs and 20,000 cats are expected to be registered under the newly launched initiative.

Residents of the city have been instructed to visit the Greater Chennai Corporation’s pet clinics in Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar, Nungambakkam, Kannamapet and Meenambakkam to get free rabies vaccination. Vets will be available to administer the vaccination from 8 AM to 3 PM. While a rabies vaccine is necessary to procure a license, it is not the sole criteria, as the Corporation stated that controlled breeding and proper waste disposal must be followed as well.

“Labrador and German Shepherd are the common breeds in Chennai homes,” said another official. The Corporation has enumerated 57,360 street dogs in 2018. The data generated by the online system of registration will help evolve animal birth control policy, said the official.
