Air India Allows Pets Under 10 kg to Fly in-cabin

Air India has revised its pet travel policy, making it easier for passengers to fly with their pets across more than 80 domestic and international routes. Under the new rules, small pets weighing up to 10 kg, including their carrier, can now travel inside the cabin with their owners. These pets will be seated in the last-row aisle seats of the economy cabin, with a limit of two pets allowed per flight.

Pets travelling in the cabin must be placed in a soft, ventilated, leak-proof carrier within the airline’s approved size. Pets weighing between 10 kg and 32 kg with their carrier will be accepted as checked baggage in an IATA-approved hard case. Animals exceeding this limit can only be transported as cargo.

Air India has also shortened the booking confirmation window, now requiring pet bookings to be finalised at least 48 hours before departure, subject to document verification. Certain restrictions continue to apply, pets must be at least eight weeks old, and animals that are critically ill, pregnant or sedated are not permitted to fly. Some long-haul or specific international routes may only allow pets to travel as cargo.

With these changes, Air India aims to provide a more pet-friendly and transparent travel experience, offering clearer guidelines on weight limits, carrier requirements, booking procedures and documentation for passengers flying with their pets.
