7 Parrot Species You Cannot Keep as Pets
These exotic parrots may be stunning, but due to threats like habitat loss and trafficking, they are protected by international laws and entirely off-limits for pet ownership.
Here Are the Parrots Cannot Keep as Pets
Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus)
Native to South America, the hyacinth macaw holds the title of the world’s largest flying parrot. It faces serious threats from habitat destruction and the illegal pet trade. As a result, it is protected under CITES Appendix I, which bans international commercial trade.
Yellow-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua sulphurea)
This critically endangered cockatoo has been heavily targeted by the exotic bird trade and continues to lose its native habitat. Listed under CITES, its international trade is strictly prohibited.
Pesquet’s Parrot (Psittrichas fulgidus)
Nicknamed the “Dracula Parrot” for its dark feathers and eerie look, this species is found only in New Guinea. It is classed as Vulnerable and is banned from both trade and pet ownership to prevent further decline.
Lear’s Macaw (Anodorhynchus leari)
Endemic to Brazil, Lear’s macaw is an endangered species under serious threat from habitat degradation and capture. To safeguard remaining wild populations, all international trade is forbidden.
Spix’s Macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii)
Possibly extinct in the wild, Spix’s macaw is one of the most critically endangered birds on the planet. Any form of trade is strictly banned to protect the few individuals that still exist in conservation programs.
Kakapo (Strigops habroptilus)
A flightless, nocturnal parrot from New Zealand, the kakapo is unlike any other parrot species. With fewer than 300 individuals alive, it is fully protected by law and cannot be owned as a pet under any circumstances.
Palm Cockatoo (Probosciger aterrimus)
Hailing from New Guinea and Australia’s Cape York Peninsula, the palm cockatoo is known for its dramatic crest and drumming behavior. It is protected under CITES, with trade prohibited to help maintain its wild population.
