How To Have a Pet Friendly Thanksgiving In 2022

An absolute feast of an occasion, thanksgiving typically means family, football, and lots of food, all centered around the holiday spirit of togetherness. Food in particular is an essential component of the festivities; the turkey and desserts alone can make your stomach rumble. It can lead to overeating though, and not just for you. Our pets tend to lounge about with us during this comfortable and cozy occasion.

While it’s tempting to toss them a few delicious morsels from the tabletop, there are better alternatives available. Turkey bones, for example, may seem like an innocuous little treat. Dogs love bones, right? Unfortunately, not these bones, as they can upset your pets stomach and put a damper on a happy occasion. Don’t fret though, as there are plenty of other options which are safe for your pet.

Foods Your Pet Can Have This Thanksgiving

While turkey is off the table, there is still a lot on it you can serve your pet. Here are a few tasty treats they can enjoy with you.

  • Turkey: Yes, we did just say turkey is off the table. The reasoning behind this is the seasoning, butter, and spices used in preparing it are harmful to your pet. You can’t feed them bones or skin, but you can give them the meat, provided it’s unseasoned; The effort required might be a bit of a hassle though.
  • Apples: With nutrition to spare due to being rich in Vitamins A & C, apples are an ideal snack to give your dog. Make sure to remove the seeds before doing so, as they are toxic in large quantities.
  • Pumpkin: These fruits are great for digestion on top of being delicious. Make sure to give them just the fruit, and not a fruit-derived alternative with a similar name as the fruit.
  • Dessert: Your pet deserves a sweet treat at the end of their meal just like us. Anything that’s pet-friendly will do. If you can’t find anything of the sort on the day of the holiday, you can use some frozen yogurt instead. Make sure to check if your froyo of choice does not contain any added or artificial sweetening agents, and you’re good to go.

Food Your Pet Should Avoid This Thanksgiving

Unfortunately, Thanksgiving is an occasion where quite a few food-motivated pups sink their teeth into something not good for them. Some foods may cause an upset stomach, while others may be more harmful to their health. To avoid such a circumstance and save yourself an impromptu trip to the vet, here area few foodstuffs your pet should avoid this thanks giving.

  • Turkey (bones and skin)
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Alcohol
  • Onions
  • Raisins
  • Grapes
  • Chocolate
  • Anything containing a high amount of sugar or spice

A little preparation and vigilance can go a long way in ensuring your pet stays healthy this Thanksgiving. Keep countertops clear and don’t feed them from the table. Provided you’re careful what your pet ends up eating, it should be a jolly thanksgiving for all. If your pet does eat something it shouldn’t, immediately contact the poison helpline at (855) 764-7661 or get in touch with your vet as soon as possible.
